Adaptation is simply the convenient umbrella term for everything the Borg do to alter their defences to specifically defeat the offensive capabilities of their enemies.

Now, whether or not the Borg could (or rather, whether they are particularly likely to - it's probably at least theoretically possible) successfully assimilate someone like a senior Magos is another question entirely. Simple logic more or less dictates that the Mechanicus has to be pretty damned informed you don't keep a starship running for thousands of years at a time if you're not, no matter how many decks may have fallen into disrepair in the interim.Ĭertainly, your average tech-priest or initiate won't necessarily know why connecting that bunch of tubes prevents everyone in the ship from being torn to shreds by ravening daemons when transitioning to the immaterium, but you can sure as hell bet that his Magos superior probably does. Despite the religious trappings of their operations, the Mechanicus does know how their technology works - how could they not? They couldn't maintain such complex and venerable war machines as the Titans - or hell, starships themselves - if they didn't have a fairly comprehensive idea of how it all works.
A great deal is often made of the purported ignorance of the Adeptus Mechanicus perhaps more than is warranted.
